Workers under the aegis of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, have on Thursday December 7, embarked on an indefinite strike at ND Western OML34 Assets NPDC/NDW JV Assets comprising  of Utorogu GasPlant, Utorogu Flow Station, Ughelli West Flow Station, Ughelli East GasPlant, Ughelli East Flow Station and Ughelli East LACTH Unit all in Delta State.

The protesting workers said they have been wallowing in abject deprivation, neglect, and demoralization, since the divestment of the formerly operated Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC Assets to ND Western in late 2012.

The PENGASSAN Branch Chairman Comrade Godwin Awoviebe, while speaking at the  Utorogu GasPlant, said workers at the facility are being treated like slaves and they do not have proper identification.

Comrade Awoviebe stated that the industrial action became  necessary after the recent resolution reached at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of PENGASSAN at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Hotel  on Tuesday the 5th of December 2023 at Port Harcourt, mandating the workers to withdraw their services from all it's assets by Thursday December 7, 2023.

He called on the Federal Government to urgently halt the wheel of destruction being rolled out on national asset like the Utorogu gas plant by the ND Western.

He said the facility is of utmost strategic importance to Nigeria and the West African Sub-region, as a major supplier of gas for electricity generation.

Also speaking, the PENGASSAN Warri Zonal Chairman, Engineer Jeli Nwanagum, represented by the Vice Chairman Comrade Ese Whiskey said PENGASSAN has written to the Police, DSS and all relevant authorities notifying them of the planned shutdown.

Comrade Ese stated that the situation would not have gotten to a shutdown if ND Western management had listened to the complains and agitations of its workers, which has lingered for  over 3 years and all efforts to bring the management to the discussion table always ends with them making promises and goes back without keeping to their promises.

In the same vein, the PENGASSAN Warri Zonal Industrial Relations Officer (IRO) Comrade James Esomior opined that they were at the Utorogu Gas Plant as representatives of the PENGASSAN National body to picket ND Western because of their anti union stand, slavery and wicked treatment of their workers.

He stated that the management treats their staff as second class citizens in their own country. Workers who have been working for the organization for over six years have the freewill to  join any association of their choice and so having joined PENGASSAN, we have been on this for over 3 years just to deduct their checkoff dues, management is threatening our members with fire and brimstone, so today we are saying no to the anti Labour vices of ND Western.

However, the industrial action was called off same day.

Addressing the protesters, Branch Chairman of the Group averred: "I am super delighted to officially announce to us that the industrial action we members of ND Western branch of PENGASSAN rising from the National Executive Council Meeting (NEC) resolution of Thursday December 7, 2023 held at the Banquet Hall Presidential Hotel Port Harcourt, was called off  in the evening of that same day, Thursday 7th of December 2023 as a result of the meeting held between OML 34 AMT JV (NEPL/ND Western) Management and PENGASSAN, brokered by the 181 Battalion of the Nigerian Army at the NEPL/NDW Housing Estate, Edjeba Warri, Delta State wherein a communique addressing the issues was signed.
